Boao Asia Development Forum (Macau) is co-organized by Boao Forum for Asia(BFA), Macau Youth Federation, and Macau University.  It is the first time that BFA holds a conference for youth in Macau. The one-day event is consist of an opening ceremony with keynote speeches about "Knowledge Interconnection: The Innovative Thoughts of Asian Development", and two sub-sessions: "Youth Innovation: The Future of Asia" and "Creative Tourism: New Engine of Economy".

Interconnection is one of the trends of this era, reflecting also a shared demand of Asian countries. Currently, uncertainties and unstableness in Asian economies are growing. Different countries are actively searching for innovative strategies that will help them retain sustainable economic development, exert more thoroughly the role of knowledge and innovation in social-economic development, and assume leadership in the global knowledge economy. There is little doubt that to promote dialogue and communication among the youths so as to stimulate their innovative thinking is a key to the joint development of Asian countries.

Knowledge economy continues to take a prominent place in the 21st century. The so-called 3rd Industrial Revolution, referring to the stage in which human society uses intangible assets as the main instrument for generation of wealth, is making knowledge deposit and knowledge innovativeness the main dynamics of driving force for a society’s economic development.

According to the 2014 Top 100 Global Innovators released by Thomson Reuters Corporation, Asian innovators, for the first time, dominated the ranking, with 46 innovators of Asia made to the list. In the ranking, the number of innovators from Japan, China, South Korea, and Taiwan has continuously grown, which certifies that Asia is outperforming North America in becoming the world’s leading innovator. The rise of Asia in innovation is indeed encouraging and empowering.

As China’s top two fastest-developing new industries, the Internet and creative industries have been rejuvenating the old and generating the new, creating booming business opportunities home and abroad and becoming a new shining spot in China’s economic development. Over the past decade, the total value of China’s cultural industry has increased over ten times, amounting to 2 trillion RMB. Two of China’s enterprises have made it into the 2014 Top 10 Global Internet Companies.

Meanwhile, the production of creative industry by making use of cultural resources has also demonstrated high economic values, and many countries have adopted the strategy to develop diverse cultural, tourism, and creative industries so as to boost economy. Unique local characteristics can surely help better identify the advantages for development. By combining product differentiation and sightseeing resources, an image of good quality would be built and business opportunities stimulated.

Macau has rich and profound cultural heritages. For four hundred years, as the port where the Chinese culture and the Western culture interact. From the exchanges between Chinese and Portuguese cultures, Macau has exhibited a unique history of East-West interconnection and accumulated diversified cultures. The Historic Center of Macau has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and was described as “the most representative, concentrated, and best-preserved collection of Chinese and western historical architectures”. How to embed the cultural industry that centers on such notions of creativeness, design, and commercialization in the industrial chain of Macau’s tourism, assist the local mid-scale and small-scale enterprises to engage in upgrading and transition or diversified businesses, and boost the development of other relevant industries so as to improve the market competitiveness of local enterprises, remains a major challenge to sustainable development of Macau’s economy.

The Boao Asia Development Forum (Macau) provides a unique platform for exchange of views on the above-mentioned topics. Here, leaders from governmental organizations, education, culture, tourism, and business fields gather together to take on knowledge interconnection as the theme, engage in in-depth discussions on the prospects of economy, tourism, culture industry, and sustainable development, and share innovative thoughts and ideas on the joint development of Asia and Macau.
