Welcome Remarks by Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong at the Opening Ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia Bangkok Conference

 July 11, 2017, Bangkok, Thailand

Your Excellency Vice Chairman Mr. ZENG Peiyan,

Your Excellency Foreign Minister Don PRAMUDWINAI,

It is a great pleasure and an honour for BFA to co-host this “Asian Regional Cooperation: New Challenges, New Approach” Conference here today. First of all, I would like to express our heart-felt thanks to all of you for attending this conference.

The Boao Forum for Asia, which was set up some 16 years ago, is a regional platform with influence beyond the region. It is working actively in helping to shape consensus, promoting cooperation and building up confidence in regional integration in Asia.

We have chosen this topic for this conference for the following points of thoughts:

From a global perspective, Asia has already become an important engine for the world’s economic recovery and growth, accounting for about 50% of the global economic growth. Its deepening regional cooperation and the stronger inter-regional trade and economic ties have boosted the integration of Asia, which is surely a safeguard for regional peace, stability, development and prosperity.

From a regional perspective, the uncertainty surrounding TPP has generated more interest in RCEP and FTAAP as well as the acceleration of free trade arrangements among relevant countries along the Belt and Road.

As you all know, this year marks the 50th anniversary of ASEAN as well as the 20th anniversary of ASEAN Plus Three. Today, Asian regional cooperation stands at a new beginning. It is our sincere hope that this conference will make its due contribution to this cooperation.

Again, we wish to thank our Thai partners for their support and help. We also wish to thank the Foreign Minister for honouring us with his presence.

Thank you.
