Secretary General Li Baodong meets with Peter Goodfellow, President of the New Zealand National Party

On June 28, 2019, Secretary General Li Baodong met with Peter Goodfellow, President of the New Zealand National Party and Chairman of the Global Presidium of NEXT Federation.

Secretary General Li welcomed President Goodfellow's visit to the Secretariat of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) and thanked the NEXT Federation for inviting the Forum to co-host the Auckland Conference in the next year.

He said that China and New Zealand are dedicated supporters of the United Nations and multilateralism and beneficiaries of free trade. At present, populism and trade protectionism pose serious challenges to economic globalization and the multilateral trading system. The international community should firmly oppose Cold War thinking and the law of the jungle and safeguard the rule-based multilateral trading system with the WTO as its core. We should promote more fair and rational global governance and enhance human well-being. BFA is willing to boost confidence in economic globalization and the realization of regional free trade zone through hosting conferences and events at home and abroad. BFA also intends to conduct in-depth discussions on how to foster new growth drivers through scientific and technological innovation to achieve high-quality growth in Asia-Pacific and global economy.

President Goodfellow agreed with Secretary General Li’s opinion and he said that although the Boao Forum for Asia had been in existence for less than 20 years, it had made important contributions to promoting mutually beneficial cooperation among Asia-Pacific countries, safeguarding a fair and free multilateral trading system and promoting the process of regional economic integration. New Zealand was founded as a trade nation and it always upholds the philosophy of openness, inclusiveness and cooperation. All sectors of New Zealand look forward to the conference held next year by the Boao Forum for Asia and we hope to have an in-depth discussion of the development of Asia-Pacific free trade zone and provide a win-win opportunity for all the participating enterprises.

The two sides also had an in-depth discussion on future cooperation between the Boao Forum for Asia and NEXT Federation in the areas of joint research and co-hosting conferences and events.
