The BFA Annual Conference 2014 concluded on April 11, 2014.

At the news briefing in the evening of the very day, BFA Secretary General ZHOU Wenzhong pointed out that in 2014, with increasing complex factors in the Asian economic development, many state governments in Asia as well as other regions of the world are committed to promoting structural adjustment. China has also launched a new round of reform and opening up after the 3rd Plenum of the 18th CPC Central Committee. In light of this, BFA set the theme of this Annual Meeting as "Asia's New Future: Identifying New Growth Drivers".

ZHOU Wenzhong said that the Annual Conference drew extensive attention. More than 1,700 personages in political, business and academic circles from 52 countries and regions of the world attended the conference. Among them, there were more than 80 ministerial-level officials from various states and chiefs of international organizations, more than 150 high-ranking executives from the World Top 500 Enterprises, as well as quite a number of academic thought leaders, who together carried out in-depth discussions and communications about the driving forces for the future sustainable development of Asia.

According to ZHOU Wenzhong, Premier LI Keqiang of China, the host country, and government leaders of other eight countries were invited to attend the Annual Conference. At the opening plenary of the Annual Conference, Premier LI Keqiang expressed 3 points of view concerning how to explore the driving forces for Asia's development under the new situation, and he also elaborated on the major issues such as the current economic situation in China and the seeking for growth drivers in three aspects. Eight foreign leaders from Asia, Europe and Africa also delivered important speeches at the opening plenary, which reflected the common demand of Asia and the developing world at large, i.e. seeking for cooperation and development.

BFA tried, through the Annual Conference, to find a path for the sustainable development of Asia and some answers to the challenges and opportunities that it is faced with. Centering on the theme of the Annual Conference, the BFA Secretariat arranged 68 forums of multiple forms, which carried out discussions about the impetus and direction of the future sustainable development of Asia from different perspectives and in different aspects, including the structural reform, technical innovation, industrial restructuring and upgrading, resources, energy and environment, education and employment, development of small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as the macroeconomic policy coordination and international economic cooperation.

ZHOU Wenzhong also pointed out that in order to make the participants have an in-depth exchange, this Annual Conference made some new attempts in the arrangement and organization of themes and events.

First, for the first time since its establishment 10 years ago, BFA extended its theme coverage from economic and social development to regional politics and security. The Annual Conference selected the three hot issues of global and regional concern, i.e. the Sino-US relations, network security and the South China Sea security as the subjects of three forums and invited concerned political leaders, former political leaders and experts to have in-depth discussions.

Second, in order to promote economic and trade cooperation, the Annual Meeting provided exchange platforms for entrepreneurs by respectively arranging dialogs for entrepreneurs from China and Russia, China and Australia, and China and Japan. Besides, the Annual Conference also organized a number of sub-forums, cocktail parties, salons, etc. to facilitate exchanges between entrepreneurs form different countries.

Third, in order to allow the business personages from different countries present at the Conference to enter the Chinese market or run businesses in China in a more effective and smooth way, the Annual Conference organized a series of events such as the dialogue between provincial governors and CEOs, the dialogue between ministers and CEOs, etc.

Fourth, the BFA established the Asian Youth Observers Roundtable mechanism. The BFA selected nearly 30 young observers, level by level, from the 28 founding countries of the BFA and organized a special closed-door brainstorming discussion for these young Asian observers with different cultural backgrounds.  They had a heated and in-depth exchange on the major issues and challenges faced with by Asia from Asian young people's perspective, and wrote a report on the exchange results and their observations.

ZHOU Wenzhong pointed out that, after 4 days of various forms of in-depth exchanges and ideological collision, the participants from all sectors deepened their understanding of a series of issues relating to the new future of Asia, reached a number of consensuses, and secured many intents of cooperation. These achievements made this Annual Conference a grand event of thought exchange to discuss about the development of Asia, which will have a lasting positive impact on and promotion for the mutual cooperation between all countries and regions in Asia for jointly building a new Asia.

ZHOU Wenzhong stated that the BFA Secretariat will take the success of the Annual Meeting as the start of a new round of efforts to further step up the exchanges and cooperation within Asia. After the Annual Conference, the BFA Secretariat will sort and sum up the Annual Conference results and promote them through the publications and thematic reports of the BFA. Besides, the BFA Secretariat will also organize various thematic forums and conferences on the theme of "Asia's New Future", including the "Conference on Energy, Resources and Sustainable Development" to be jointly held in Seattle in this September with the Clean Energy Forum in Seattle of the US, and the "Financial Cooperation Conference" to be jointly held in Dubai in this October with the Government of the United Arab Emirates.
