BFA Chronicle in 2002

From April 11 to 13, 2002, the first Annual Meeting of BFA, with a theme of “New Century, New Challenge, New Asia,” was held in Boao, Hainan. Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji attended the meeting and gave the keynote speech entitled “Joining Hands to Create a Bright Future for Asia in the New Century.” Junichiro Koizumi, Prime Minister of Japan, Thaksin, Prime Minister of Thailand, Leehan-dong, Prime Minister of South Korea, Nguyen Manh Cam, Vice Prime Minister of Vietnam, and other celebrities from governmental, business, and academic circles attended the meeting. Also present at the meeting were about 1,900 delegates from 48 countries. 

The first BFA member meeting was held during the first BFA Annual Meeting to have the first council elected. Ramos, former President of the Philippines, was elected BFA Chairman. Zhang Xiang, former Vice Minister of China’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, replaced Singh to be the second Secretary General of BFA. 

From November 18 to 20, 2002, BFA, National Tourism Administration of China, and Asian Cooperation Dialogue cosponsored in Guilin of Guangxi the Asia Tourism Forum, the first professional forum held by BFA. Nearly 500 delegates from 32 Asian and European countries and ten international and regional organizations attended the Tourism Forum. 

Chen Jinhua, Vice Chair of CPPCC, and Acting President of Nauru, Vice Prime Minister of Vietnam, and Frangali, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization, attended the forum where the BFA (Guilin, China) Declaration was passed. The Declaration includes four parts: Tourist Cooperation and Development in Asian Region, Development and Innovation of Tourist Products, Sustainable Development of Tourism, and Socioeconomic Contribution by Tourism.
