On February 2, 2010, BFA held a press conference in Beijing, announcing that its 2010 Annual Meeting would be held in Boao, Hainan, China from April 9 to 11. This would be the first large-scale multilateral dialog involving political and business leaders and opinion leaders of Asian region since the official initiation of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Zone on January 1, 2010. During the press conference, representatives of the sponsors for the BFA 2010 Annual Meeting, Volvo Group, FMG, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, Merrill Lynch, Evonik Industries, Tata Group, Shanghai General Motors, Tencent, Mengniu Dairy Group, and Deloitte, attended the signing ceremony.

On April 8, 2010, the BFA General Assembly was held. According to the amendment to the BFA Statutes by the BFA Council Meeting, a BFA director cannot serve more than two terms. Therefore, some directors who have already served two terms have to retire. Through three-month discussion and opinion solicitation by the Council, nine new directors were elected, including Badawi, former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Chernomyrdin, former Prime Minister of Russia, Yasuo Fukuda, former Prime Minister of Japan, Goh Chok Tong, former Prime Minister and Senior Minister of Singapore, Victor Fung, Chairman of Li & Fung Group, Jiang Sixian, Vice Governor of Hainan Province, Henry Paulson, former Financial Minister of the US, Raffarin, former Prime Minister of France, and Sasaki Matsuo, Chairman of Mitsubishi Corp. The nominations for these nine directors were passed unanimously by BFA members.

On April 9, 2010, the BFA 2009 Report on Development of Emerging Economies was published, which was the product of BFA’s first cooperation with the World Economy and Politics Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The report was the first to study emerging economies as a whole, especially the 11 most typical emerging economies out of Group 20. The report was also the first to raise the concept of E11 (11 emerging economies), pointing out a fixed scope and target for the study of emerging economies.

From April 9 to 11, 2010, the Ninth BFA Annual Meeting, with a theme of “Green Recovery: Realistic Choice for Asia’s Sustainable Development,” was held in Boao. Xi Jinping, Vice President of China, attended the opening ceremony and gave the keynote speech entitled “Working Together to Promote Asia’s Green Development and Sustainable Development.” Jumari, President of Laos, Rasmussen, Prime Minister of Denmark, Batbold, Prime Minister of Mongolia, Rahimi, the First Vice President of Iran, Khalili, Vice President of Afghanistan, Guterres, Vice Prime Minister of East Timor, Cai Tang, Secretary of State and Minister of Planning of Cambodia, and Goh Chok Tong, Senior Minister of Singapore, attended the opening ceremony and gave speeches. Former political leaders such as Yasuo Fukuda, former Prime Minister of Japan, Badawi, former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Aziz, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Ramos, former President of the Philippines, Hawke, former Prime Minister of Australia, Tereshchenko, former Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, and Paulson, former Financial Minister of the US were invited to attend the meeting. Other guests present at the meeting included over 2,000 political leaders, corporate representatives, experts, scholars, and media reporters from 32 countries and regions.

On April 30, 2010, the Shanghai World Expo was inaugurated and the BFA Hall was open to the public.

On July 8, 2010, Zhou Wenzhong, former Chinese Ambassador to the US, took up his post as BFA Secretary General. In accordance with the BFA Statutes, new BFA Council members were elected during the BFA Annual Meeting in April 2010. Nine new directors were elected by the BFA General Assembly. Yasuo Fukuda, former Prime Minister of Japan, was elected new Chairman of BFA. Zhou Wenzhong was appointed Secretary General of BFA.

The new Council had 15 members: Yasuo Fukuda (Chairman), former Prime Minister of Japan, Zeng Peiyan (Vice Chairman), former Vice Premier of China, Al-Mady, CEO of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, Badawi, former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Victor Chernomyrdin, former Prime Minister of Russia, Chey Tae-won, Chairman of the Board of South Korea SK Group, Victor Fung, Chairman of Hong Kong Li & Fung Group and Chairman of International Chamber of Commerce, Goh Chok Tong, former Prime Minister and Senior Minister of Singapore, Jiang Sixian, Vice Governor of Hainan Province, Mitra, Secretary General of India Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Paulson, former Financial Minister of the US, Raffarin, former Prime Minister of France, Mikio Sasaki, President of Mitsubishi, Michael Treschow, Chairman of the Board of Swedish Ericsson and BFA Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong.

On September 8, 2010, Yu Zhengsheng, Member of Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee and Secretary of CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, met with Yasuo Fukuda, Chairman of BFA, Zeng Peiyan, Vice Chairman of BFA, and Jiang Sixian, Director of BFA and Vice Governor of Hainan Province. Yu welcomed the holding of the BFA Council Meeting in Shanghai and the guests’ visit to Shanghai for the activities on the BFA Honorary Day during the Shanghai World Expo. Ding Xuexiang, Member of the Standing Committee and Secretary General of CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, was present at the meeting.

On September 9, 2010, BFA held its Honorary Day activities in the Shanghai World Expo Center. Yasuo Fukuda, BFA Chairman and former Vice Prime Minister of Japan, and Yang Wenchang, Chief Representative of Chinese Government and Head of Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, attended the activities and gave speeches. Zeng Peiyan, BFA Vice Chairman, and Zhao Zhenyu, Vice Chief Representative of Chinese Government for World Expo, attended the activities. Hong Hao, Vice Secretary General of Shanghai Municipal Government and Head of World Expo Bureau, presided over the activities. BFA Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong and some BFA directors, sponsors, and members attended the relevant activities. The Australia FMG Group gave the activities great support as the sole sponsor.

BFA was one of the international organizations participating in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. According to the negotiation between the BFA Secretariat and the Shanghai Expo Bureau (SEB), September 9 was designated as the BFA Honorary Day, on which, the Chinese Government and SEB will hold official celebrations for BFA. This was the first time BFA participating in a world expo. The BFA Hall is located in the Joint Hall for International Organizations of Shanghai World Expo Park.

On September 26, 2012, BFA donated 50,000 RMB to the Pakistan “2010 Prime Minister Flood Relief Foundation” via the Pakistani Embassy in China.

On October 27, 2010, BFA held member club activities at the Grand Hotel Beijing. Focusing on “Interpretation of China’s Growth into World’s Second Largest Economy,” the activities involved guests and BFA members for dialog and exchange. The activities were presided over by Zhou Wenzhong, Secretary General of BFA. Fu Ying, Vice Foreign Minister of China, made the keynote speech and held discussion and exchange with BFA members and guests. The dialog guest Xiang Bin, President of CKGSB, and Vice Minister Fu answered some questions raised by BFA members. Over 60 BFA members and sponsor representatives attended the activities.

On November 2, 2010, BFA and the US-China Business Council cosponsored at the Grand Hyatt Beijing a “China-US Entrepreneur Dialog Meeting,” which was presided over jointly by Zhou Wenzhong, BFA Secretary General, and Muhtar Kent, Chairman of the Board of US-China Business Council. Chinese and American entrepreneurs had active and frank discussion about some topics of common concern, including economic prospects of China and the US, global economic recovery, RMB exchange rate, investment environments and challenges confronting enterprises in China and the US, and corporate innovation against the background of globalization. They reached consensus on a number of issues, including joint promotion of the healthy development of China-US economic and trade cooperation and fight against trade protectionism. Entrepreneurs from China and the US, including Ning Gaoning, Chairman of the Board of Cofco Corporation, Wang Jianzhou, Chairman of the Board of China Mobile Group, Ren Hongbin, Chairman of the Board of Chinese Machinery Industry Group, Chen Feng, Chairman of the Board of Hainan Airlines Group, Miao Jianmin, Chairman of the Board of China Life Asset Management Company, Ju Weimin, Vice President of CITIC Group, and Muhtar Kent, Chairman of the Board of US-China Business Council and Chairman of the Board of Coca-Cola Company, Robert A. McDonald, Vice Chairman of the Board of US-China Business Council and Chairman of the Board of P&G, John Frisbie, Chairman of US-China Business Council, James W. Griffith, President of the Timken Company, Keith E. Williams, President of Underwriters Laboratories, Roberta Lipson, President of Chindex International Inc, Dan Brutto, President and CEO of the Honorable Barbara Hackman Franklin and President of UPS International Corporation, Paul D. Conway, Senior Vice President of Cargill Company, Michael L. Ducker, Chief Business Operation Officer and President of FedEx International, and Robert Poole, Vice Chairman of US-China Business Council, attended the dialog activities. This was the first cooperation between BFA and the US-China Business Council. Both sides were satisfied with the result and agreed to carry out further cooperation in future.

On November 3, 2010, Yasuo Fukuda, Chairman of BFA, Zeng Peiyan, Vice Chairman of BFA, and Zhou Wenzhong, Secretary General of BFA, separately sent messages of condolences to the Presidential General Office of Russia Federation to express their profound condolences over the death of Viktor Chernomyrdin, former Prime Minister of Russia and Director of BFA, and extend sincere regards to his families. A world-known politician and diplomat, Chernomyrdin was also an old friend of the Chinese people. In April 2010, he was elected a new member of the BFA Council. His joining brought new vitality to BFA and further upgraded its international influence.

On November 4, 2010, BFA Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong met at the BFA Secretariat with Zedillo, former President of Mexico, who was paying a visit to Beijing. They had an in-depth dialog about the development of BFA and several hot issues of current concern of the international community.

On November 5, 2010, BFA Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong met with Carl Worker, New Zealand Ambassador to China. Zhou thanked New Zealand (one of the sponsor nations) for its active support to the founding and development of BFA and welcomed New Zealand to continue its constructive role in promoting BFA’s healthy development.

On November 26, 2010, the Boao Youth Forum (Hong Kong) cosponsored by BFA and the Hong Kong Y.Elites Association Limited was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. The Youth Forum, with a theme of “Development Opportunities and Challenges Confronting the Recovering Asia,” aimed to discuss the important strategic status and role of Asia in future globalization, historical mission of the youth, and the way of giving play to wisdom and creativity for Asia’s development and progress. The Youth Forum analyzed future development opportunities and challenges confronting Asia from three angles, including sustainable development, cultural industry, and Asian finance. The Forum engaged 15 well-known scholars, officials, entrepreneurs, and experts from the Asian-Pacific Region as speaking guests. Over 1,800 political and business leaders, academic elites, and youth delegates from the Asian-Pacific region and over 50 local and overseas media attended the Forum.

On November 30, 2010, BFA Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong met at the BFA Secretariat with Aziz, former Prime Minister of Pakistan. Both sides exchanged ideas about issues such as the development of BFA, reform of the international financial system, and emerging economies.

On November 30, 2010, BFA Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong met at the BFA Secretariat with Han Taikui, Head of South Korea Jeju Peace Institute. Both sides discussed their future cooperation.

On December 2, 2010, BFA held member club activities at the Grand Hotel Beijing to welcome the visiting Raffarin, BFA Director and former Prime Minister of France, and Koppe, Chairman of the French National Assembly UMP Party. The activities were presided over by BFA Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong. Raffarin and Koppe gave speeches on the global status and economic situation of Europe, China-Europe relations, and China-France relations. Over 50 BFA members and sponsor representatives attended the activities.

From December 8 to 9, 2010, the “Asia FTA Forum: Prospect and Challenge” cosponsored by BFA and the Asian Development Bank was held at the Beijing Shangri-La Hotel. The Asian Development Bank proposed the holding of the forum. The proposal received active response from BFA and great support from the Ministry of Commerce of China. The University of International Business and Economics undertook the organization of the Forum, which had eight sub-forums focusing separately on the survey of Asia FTA, FTA strategy of China, multilateral FTA and WTO, political factors of FTA, FTA prospect, trade convenience, investment liberty, and service trade. C. Lawrence Greenwood, Jr., Vice President of Asian Development Bank, and Zhou Wenzhong, Secretary General of BFA, attended the opening ceremony and gave speeches. Yi Xiaozhun, Vice Minister of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, gave the keynote speech.

From December 2 to 6, 2010, at the invitation of Mitsubishi, a Director Unit of BFA, Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong paid a business visit to Japan. During the visit, Zhou paid an official call on Yasuo Fukuda, BFA Chairman, and reported to him recent activities of BFA and preparations for the 2011 Annual Meeting. With the active assistance of Mitsubishi, Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong held two BFA introduction meetings to acquaint top Japanese entrepreneurs with BFA development and general conditions of its annual meeting in the next year. He invited Japanese entrepreneurs to attend the next year’s BFA Annual Meeting. Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong also visited two BFA member units in Japan ---Toyota Motor Corp. and Omron Corporation.
