BFA Holds the Seminar on “Infrastructure Connectivity in Asia–the Financing Challenge” in Beijing

At 9:00am on June 29, 2014, the Seminar on “Infrastructure Connectivity in Asia – the Financing Challenge” sponsored by BFA began at the Conference Center of Beijing International Hotel. Attending the seminar were over 180 governmental officials, experts, scholars, and entrepreneurs in financial and banking industries from 29 countries and international organizations, including Zeng Peiyan, BFA vice chairman, former vice premier of China, and chief Chinese representative to BFA, Jin Liqun, chairman of the China International Capital Corporation and chief of the Working Group for Establishment of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank under the Ministry of Finance, Zhang Xiaoqiang, executive vice chairman of the China Center for International Economic Exchanges, and Zhang Jiaming, chief of Dongcheng District of Beijing. The opening ceremony was presided over by BFA Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong.

Zhou Wenzhong welcomed all delegates and expressed satisfaction with the increasingly widespread concern for infrastructure connectivity in the Asian-Pacific Region since the proposal of multichannel financing for infrastructure connectivity in Asia put forward by BFA Vice Chairman Zeng Peiyan at the financial cooperation conference sponsored by BFA in Mumbai of India in 2012.

Zhou pointed out that at the “Seminar on Asian-Pacific Infrastructure Connectivity” held by BFA in Bali of Indonesia in October 2013 and the BFA Annual Conference 2014 held in Boao of Hainan in this April, delegates unanimously agreed that quickening infrastructure construction in Asia is a necessary hardware condition for realizing regional connectivity and constructing an integrated Asian market. In addition, infrastructure construction itself is conducive to structure adjustment by the economies, and can create new internal demand and promote sustainable economic development.

Zhou hopes that the seminar can build up consensus and draw on collective wisdom and useful ideas for the coming cooperation.

According to Zhang Jiaming, Beijing City is marching toward the goal of becoming a world-class metropolis. As its core functional area, Dongcheng District is on its way to becoming an “international and modern new district.” Since adopting the more proactive opening-up and internationalizing strategy, the seven-century-old district has shown new vitality and demonstrated more thoroughly to us the importance of opening up and connectivity.

Zhang Jiaming pointed out that today’s Dongcheng District houses some major administrative setups of the capital, including several central ministries and commissions, national administrations, CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, Beijing Municipal Government, and their subordinate units. It is a demonstrative area in inheriting and developing historical culture. Being home to the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven, the only world cultural heritage sites in the downtown of Beijing, it also boasts the most listed intangible cultural heritages among all districts of Beijing. It is also a world-famous cultural tourism district. With complete tourist service facilities, it has always been ranking top among all districts of Beijing in term of the total number of tourists and  tourist incomes. It is an internationally well-known business center by housing two “famous business streets of China” , Wangfujing and Qianmen, five “characteristic business streets of Beijing” , including the Nanluoguxiang Alley and Hongqiao Market, many “China Time-honored Brands” such as Tongrentang and Quanjude, and some top international brands. Last but not least, it is an important stronghold for Beijing’s high-end service industry. Six major industries make up 66% of the economic aggregate of the entire district. It ranks second among all districts of Beijing in housing regional headquarters of transnational corporations. All these make Dongcheng District a model district suitable for living and establishing businesses.

Zhang Jiaming said that Dongcheng District has successfully initiated and hosted several large-scale international and national activities, including three successive sessions of the China Beijing International Sports Dance Tournament and UNESCO’s “Seminar on Sustainable Education and High-quality Education.” The holding of the current BFA special seminar in Dongcheng District represents the full trust and affirmation of the BFA Organizing Committee in Dongcheng District’s capability of organizing large-scale international conferences. The event will positively promote the internationalization and modernization of Dongcheng District. Dongcheng District will assist to make the seminar  an internationally first-class meeting and will continue giving full support to BFA’s future work and development in China, particularly in Beijing.
