Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2014 - Exploring Asia's New Future

[Secretariat of Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), 8 January] At a press conference held by the BFA Secretariat this afternoon, Secretary-General Mr. Zhou Wenzhong gave a detailed briefing about the preparatory work of the BFA Annual Conference 2014. He announced that the Annual Conference will be held in Boao, Hainan province, China from 8 to 11 April 2014 with its theme being "Asia's New Future: Identifying New Growth Drivers". The opening ceremony of the Annual Meeting is scheduled for 10 April, and the Secretariat has extended invitation to state leaders of China, and will invite a number of leaders of other countries.

Mr. Zhou Wenzhong said, The Annual Conference, which is one of the high-end platforms for dialogue among Asian and emerging economies, is assuming growing weight on the global stage, especially in promoting development and cooperation of Asian and emerging economies.

Mr. Zhou Wenzhong explained why BFA selected the theme “Asia's New Future: Identifying New Growth Drivers” for Annual Conference 2014. The fast growth of Asian countries and emerging economies in past years is largely attributed to globalization and industrial relocation. As the prospect of global economic recovery remains obscure, emerging markets and most Asian economies are losing steam in their respective economic growth, and the institutional dividends of reform are disappearing. Therefore, these countries are now in need of structural reform in order to identify new drivers for growth, as this is the only way to ensure a sustainable future for their economic growth.

The year 2014 will be a critical period for reform in Asian and emerging economies. China, Japan, India and Indonesia are all making vigorous efforts to advance their new reform agenda. Against such a background, the BFA Secretariat has chosen "Asia's New Future: Identifying New Growth Drivers" as the theme of the Annual Conference 2014 for the purpose of building up consensus and exploring new areas and thinking for reform by promoting a lively discussion among political, business and academic leaders.

Mr. Zhou Wenzhong said, the Annual Conference 2014 will include 60 panel discussions, with a focus on reform, innovation and sustainable development. Discussions on reform will include such topics as global financial reform, reshaping the energy landscape, reform in some of the main economic bodies, reviving the competitiveness of emerging markets, the future of central banks, deregulation and the opportunities for private enterprises. The agenda items related to innovation include health service industries, 4G and mobile internet, 3D printing, digital manufacturing and the 3rd industrial revolution, e-commerce, big data, innovation and entrepreneurship, Shanghai free trade zone and institutional innovation. Topics in the sustainable development category include climate change, automobile and society, urbanization of people,  cyber security, the power of oriental wisdom, business ethics in the pharmaceutical industry, the future of global trading regime, and helping women at the bottom of the pyramid. In addition, this year's Annual Conference will for the first time include a session on the economic cooperation along the Silk Road and a promotion event co-organized with the Hong Kong SAR.

According to Mr. Zhou Wenzhong, in order to help the young people better understand the economic and social development of the world and participate in various cooperation processes, BFA will initiate "young observers" program from 2014. The program will invite talented young people from around the globe to attend the annual conference and contribute their wisdom to the development and cooperation of Asian and emerging economies.
