Working meeting of Boao Forum for Asia Board of Directors held in Beijing

On October 29, 2014, members of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Board of Directors attended a working meeting in Beijing, on which they focused on the theme and topics of the forum’s coming annual conference that will be held late next March. They also discussed some long-term and strategic issues concerning the forum development.

Mr. Yasuo FUKUDA chairman of the BFA board of directors and former Japanese prime minister; Mr. ZENG Peiyan, vice-chairman of the BFA board of directors and former Chinese vice-premier; and Jean-Pierre RAFFARIN, former French prime minister, Robert James Lee HAWKE former Australian prime minister Sergey TERECHSHENKO, former prime minister of Kazakhstan and Sergey N. KATYRIN, president of the Russian Federation Chamber of Commerce and Industry attended the working meeting as BFA members of the board of directors or as BFA members of the council of advisors.

From next year on, the BFA annual conference will be held on the last weekend of March, and the duration will be extended to four days, according to the meeting.

In the context of global economic downturn, countries and regions in Asia are witnessing increasing conflicts and overlooking common interests, according to the meeting. Meanwhile, the Asian economic integration is making progress. ASEAN Community, a highlight of the regional cooperation in Asia, is expected to be founded in 2015. The BFA annual conference 2015, which is obliged to promote the regional cooperation now at a critical juncture, is aimed to build the shared vision of Asia’s joint development, contemplate and expand the parties' common interests, and make effort to forge an Asian community of common destiny. Therefore, “Asia’s new future: toward a community of common destiny” is proposed on the working meeting as the theme of the BFA annual conference 2015 so as to enable attendees to reach a consensus on this respect.

The working meeting also reviewed the topics for the BFA annual conference 2015 that was submitted by the BFA secretariat and put forward suggestions for revision. The annual conference is expected to cover more topics and open more sub-forums than previous sessions. There will be more than 70 substantive discussions, covering six aspects — macro-economy, technological innovation, industrial upgrading, political security, cultural innovation and social development & people’s livelihood. More than 300 government officials, corporate leaders and economists are expected to deliver keynote speeches. They will also interact and brainstorm with more than 1,200 attendees.
