The Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2017 was held from March 23 to 26, 2017. On the sidelines, Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong met with a number of participants, including BFA Directors Jean-Pierre Raffarin, former Prime Minister of France and Surakiart Sathirathai, former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, as well as BFA Advisor Bob Hawke, former Prime Minister of Australia, in addition to Manuel Cabral, Minister of Economy, Portugal; Kevin Tsujhara, Chairman of Warner Bros; and Ellen Richey, Vice Chairman of Visa.

Zhou briefed them on the background and significance of the conference’s theme—Globalization & Free Trade: The Asian Perspective—and the Boao Forum for Asia Declaration on Economic Globalization, as well as the general picture of the Annual Conference this year and the upcoming meetings to be held in relevant countries with regards to the “One Belt, One Road” initiative.

The participants reaffirmed the theme as a visionary choice that holds high relevance at a time of rising anti-globalization sentiment, and applauded the declaration as a timely and significant document, which demonstrates Asian countries’ support of globalization and BFA’s unique role. Some of them, such as Surakiart Sathirathai and Manuel Cabral, also invited the BFA to hold meetings in their countries to promote the “One Belt, One Road” initiative.

During the Annual Conference, Zhou also accompanied Vice Chairman Zeng Peiyan to visit U Myint Swe, Vice President of Myanmar, and attended his meetings with Goh Chok Tong, Emeritus Senior Minister of Singapore, Carlos Gutiérrez, former US Secretary of Commerce, and Derek Aberle, President of Qualcomm Incorporated.
