On June 15, 2017, the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) One Belt One Road—the New Driver of Global Trade Conference was held in the Palace of Independence, Astana, Kazakhstan. Co-organized by the BFA and the Astana Economic Forum, the conference, which brought together nearly 200 government officials, economists and business leaders from China, Russia and Central Asian countries, was part of the 10th Astana Economic Forum themed with “New Energy-New Economy”.

Participants included Yang Xiyu, Executive Vice President of the Institute of the Boao Forum for Asia; Du Liefen, Director of CEFC China Energy Co., Ltd.; Patrick C. P. Ho, Deputy Chairman and Secretary General of the China Energy Fund Committee; Dmitry Pankin, Chairman of Eurasian Development Bank's Management Board; Jonathan Woetzel, MGI Director and Senior Partner of McKinsey & Company's China Office; Musabayev Turlybek, General Director of the State Urban Planning Cadastre; Ariel Cohen, Director of the Center for Energy, Natural Resources and Geopolitics (CENRG); and Ramil Hasanov, Secretary General of the Turkic Council. The topics addressed at the conference included: the areas of cooperation and complementary advantages of China and Kazakhstan in the “Belt and Road” initiative; how to change Kazakhstan's energy advantages into manufacturing strengths; the trends of green energy development in Central Asia; and financial services and cooperation in transnational production capacity cooperation.

This was the second time for the BFA to organize such a conference in Astana. The event not only explored how China's “Belt and Road” initiative can be aligned with Kazakhstan's “The Path to the Future” program, but also provided an in-depth analysis of potential opportunities and challenges in China's economic and trade cooperation with the en-route countries.

The program of this year's Astana Economic Forum comprises 25 sessions, 4 roundtables, 2 breakfast sessions, 1 closed-door meeting and 1 plenary session, which are organized in three thematic directions—Sustainable Economic Growth; International Trade and Infrastructure; and Innovation and “Green Economy”. Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan; and Igor Shuvalov, First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, attended and addressed the plenary session. The Forum was also graced by the presence of Askar Mamin, First Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan; Timur Suleimenov, Minister of National Economy of Kazakhstan; Kanat Bozumbaev, Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan; and Zhenis Kasymbek, Minister of Investment and Development of Kazakhstan.
