——Boao Forum for Asia Initiates Preparations for Annual Conference 2018

On January 25, 2018, Boao Forum for Asia held a press conference in Beijing to brief the media on preparations for the Annual Conference 2018.

According to Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong, the BFA Annual Conference 2018 will be a four-day event scheduled from April 8 to 11 in Boao, Hainan around the theme of “An Open and Innovative Asia for a World of Greater Prosperity”. The opening ceremony will be held on April 10.

Amid increased anti-globalization and protectionist words and actions, which have already caused  setbacks in efforts for more globalization,  Asia and the Pacific needs development which is  more open, better coordinated,  more inclusive and balanced than ever before. Today, the global economic growth remains vulnerable and its prospects uncertain.  Under the circumstances, growth needs to be generated by more innovation rather than through increasing input in terms of means of production. With peace and development continuing to guide its agenda, Asia and the rest of the world share the mission of building a global community with a shared future.

Against this background, the Annual Conference’s agenda is so designed that can be divided into four modules of some 60 sessions, namely  “Globalization & the Belt and Road Initiative”, “An Open Asia”, “Innovation” and “Reform.”

The “Globalization & the Belt and Road Initiative” module will be a continuation of relevant topics addressed at the 2017 Annual Conference, but will be more focused on sorting out  possible solutions. Sessions in this module include “Globalization: the Next Phase”, “Rethinking Overseas Investment”, “21st-Century Maritime Silk Road: Islands Economic Cooperation Forum”, etc.

The “An Open Asia” module is intended to broaden the depth and breadth of regional cooperation in a way that would lead to a more open and better coordinated Asia. In addition to a number of bilateral sessions, this module also includes multilateral sessions such as “Accelerators of the Asian Economic Integration”, “Asia Regional Cooperation Organization Roundtable” and “Emerging Economies”, etc.

The “Innovation” module is based on the concept of “innovation-driven development”, which is an option for Asian and emerging economies to overtake developed countries through “leapfrog” development. This module comprises sessions such as “The Future of Transportation”, “The Future of Production”, “The Future of Communication”, “Blockchain” and “The New Retail”, etc.

The “Reform” module is both a review of the past 40 years of China’s reform and opening-up as well as a preview of  plans for further reform mapped out by the 19th CPC National Congress. The Annual Conference will have two sessions exclusively dedicated to “40 Years of Reform & Opening-up” in addition to other related sessions such as “Capital Market Reform”, “Monetary Policy: Back to Normal”, “Tax Cuts”, “Rural Reinvigoration” and “City Clusters”, etc.

Moreover, there will also be sessions specifically addressing topics relating to the Guandong-HK-Macao Greater Bay Area, the Xiong’an New Area and China’s ecological civilization strategy.
