President of the Global Health Forum of BFA and former Director-General of WHO Margaret Chan Positively Evaluates China‘s Fights against COVID-19 Pneumonia Epidemic

 

On March 9, Boao Forum for Asia held Global Health Forum Long-distance preparatory work meeting to discuss preparations for the Second Conference. Dr. Margaret Chan, President of the Global Health Forum of Boao Forum for Asia and former Director- General of the WHO spoke at the meeting and positively evaluated China's effectiveness in fighting against COVID-19 pneumonia epidemic.

Dr. Chan said that arduous efforts, huge costs and major contributions made by the Chinese government and the Chinese people in the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pneumonia epidemic have set a new benchmark for the world and are worth learning by other countries. Recently, the Report of the China-WHO Joint Mission confirmed China's rapid and effective measures to successfully curb the spread of the virus, reduce diseases and save lives, earning 4-6 weeks for countries to prepare epidemic prevention. By taking into full account the overall interest of the whole country, the epidemic in China is under control since late February and shows a steady decline and positive trend, which creates conditions for the economic recovery of “fight against the epidemic and orderly resumption to work and production".

Dr. Chan suggested that with the rapid spread of COVID-19 pneumonia epidemic, China should monitor the trend of global epidemic development, adjust prevention and control strategies, guard against imported cases, adjust economic expectations and forecasts, make more comprehensive plans and arrangements for both finance and resource.

Dr. Chan said that the outbreak of COVID-19 pneumonia epidemic will become the hottest topic in the global health and economic conference in 2020. As a comprehensive international conference in the field of health, this Conference is also a platform for exchanges and cooperation among the political, business, academic and research communities and it will attract worldwide attention. The Conference will make targeted adjustments to the latest situation on the basis of established theme and sub-forums. Discussions on macro issues include: global governance, international cooperation to address major health threats, the relationship between national security and public health, the relationship between economic development and public health, and international cooperation in disaster assistance and so on. Discussions on technical issues include: the experiences and lessons of COVID-19 pneumonia epidemic, challenges to implement the “International Health Regulations”, timely notification of new emerging diseases, prevention and control measures, prevention and control of health workers' infection, patient treatment experience, international cooperation on R&D of vaccine and drug, social governance, psychological counseling, public opinion guidance, elimination of prejudice and response to rumors.  

Dr. Chan pointed out that the Conference will be held as scheduled in mid-June. In the meanwhile, the Conference will carry out risk assessment, including the impact of international epidemic developments on the Conference, and make corresponding plans and preparations. Dr. Chan has contacted members of the Scientific Experts Group of the Conference, and most of them are the experts serving for World Health Organization or public health of different countries. Recently, they have participated in the prevention and control of the epidemic in person, who all have rich experience. She is confident that they will give more professional and comprehensive opinions on the topics and agenda of the Second Conference.
