“The Pandemic and the Changing World” Boao Forum for Asia Published a Research Report on the Global Impact of COVID-19

On June 2nd, Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) released the report “The Pandemic and the Changing World" online. Mr. LI Baodong, Secretary-General of BFA, was invited for an introduction to the report.

The report was generated by a BFA research project on the influence of COVID19 as a public emergency of international concern. It consolidated the discussion from BFA's  international community at a series of online seminars during the past months. Building on the opinions from these political and business leaders, the report reviewed the current situation and the response efforts of various countries, and proposed 10 observations and reflections on “how will the pandemic change the world”.

The report proposes several defining statements. It suggests that the pandemic is the gravest global crisis that broke out after the cold war and the first “globalized” pandemic. While different regions of the world are still at distinctive stages of pandemic-control, Asia countries excelled at the comprehensive test posed by the coronavirus, with China performed best among all. Besides, China, Japan and Korea encouraged and supported each other, setting a good example of crisis collaboration for other parts of the world.

The report believes that the pandemic has already hugely impacted the dynamics of the international economy, security and development and will accelerate the evolution of international orders and societal landscape. Though the mega-trend of globalization will not end due to the pandemic, its structure and connotation are likely to be redefined.

Secretary-General LI Baodong, in his remarks, emphasized that the pandemic sent to the world a sobering reminder - human beings live in the same “Global Village". Accept it or not, the world had become a community with a shared future. No country could immune itself from a global challenge. It was also BFA's belief that only through multilateralism and through enhanced international cooperation, the world could be ready for global challenges as such.

SG LI also pointed out that while the pandemic was still unfolding, our understanding of the impacts of the pandemic was a work in progress. Some viewpoints in the report were not elaborated and some data may soon be outdated. Nevertheless, BFA hoped that this report could serve as a source of inspiration for other research and studies. The Boao Forum would continue to follow closely the COVID 19 pandemic and the challenges it brings to the world, and continue to play an active role in building international consensus and promoting international cooperation.
