Mr. Ban underscored the meaning of BFA secretariat’s first branch office outside Beijing in the forum’s 20-year history. As Hainan is ushering a historical opportunity - the Hainan FTP, BFA secretariat has combined self-development with local construction by settling the branch office in Haikou.

Mr. Li said that the inauguration of Haikou office is a milestone in the developmental history of both BFA and the secretariat, marking a more intensified connection with Hainan province, where BFA originated. A closer collaboration between BFA and Hainan will oil the wheel of free trade and regional integration in Asia, surely fueling common prosperity in the worldwide.

Mr. Mao reinforced BFA’s contribution to Hainan’s reform and opening-up. The presence of BFA bridges Hainan to the rest of the world, and builds international reputation. Haikou office is a physical output of ‘consultation, cooperation and shared benefits’. Hainan will fully support the operation of Haikou office and advance it to be a platform to understand Hainan FTP.

Mr. Raffarin praised that anchoring in Haikou is ‘an excellent choice’. He believed that BFA has grown into the most dynamic and productive platform, where delegates conduct brainstorms and in-depth exchanges of views on issues concerning the future of the region, as well as the balance of its development with the rest of the world.

Ms. Clare P. Fearnley, ambassador of New Zealand Embassy said that New Zealand has been benefit a lot as a founding member of BFA. Many leaders and ministers have attended the annual meeting. She believed that BFA could serve an even greater purpose than ever to address global challenges on the circumstance of covid-19.

This move is at the threshold of BFA 20 anniversary, signaling deeper collaboration with Hainan in the future. It also conveys the message that BFA will bring the strength of international organization into full play by mobilizing more international resources for Hainan, and contribute to the construction of Hainan FTP.
