COULL, GARY

Chairman, CLSA Limited

Mr. Coull is a co-founder and Chairman of CLSA Limited, an award-winning brokerage, investment banking and direct investment group specialising in the markets of the Asia Pacific including Japan. Mr. Coull was born in 1954. He came to Hong Kong from Canada by chance in 1977 and stayed, working for six years as a business journalist for the South China Morning Post and later for the Far Eastern Economic Review. He first visited China in 1978 and reported regularly on the country's early years of modernisation. From 1983-86 he started and managed an investment and China trading company before joining Hong Kong brokerage Winfull Laing & Cruickshank in 1987. French bank Credit Lyonnais subsequently bought Laing and the Hong Kong business was reorganised in 1989 for a major regional expansion. In 2003, Credit Lyonnais merged with Credit Agricole to form the 5th largest bank in the work by assets, giving CLSA an even stronger platform. Mr. Coull is also Executive Chairman of CLSA's private equity group, whose investors include General Electric Pension Trust, Sony Life, Verizon Communications, the German insurance group Allianz and Credit Agricole. He is also a governor of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and a director of the Asian Corporate Governance Association.
