About Ulaanbaatar

Located in the middle of the Mongolian plateau, Ulaanbaatar is the capital city of Mongolia. At 4704.4 square kilometers and with a population of 1.4 million, it is also the largest city of Mongolia and is home to over half of the country’s population. The beautiful Tuul River flows through the city, and the grand Sükhbaatar square lies in the city center.

Ulaanbaatar is the political, cultural, and economic heart of the country. Founded over 300 years ago in 1639 as Da Khüree (meaning “Great Monastery”), it changed location over twenty-eight times before it settled permanently at its current location in 1778. After the founding of the Mongolian People’s Republic in 1924, the city was chosen as capital and named Ulaanbaatar, meaning “City of Red Hero”.

Ulaanbaatar is a culturally vibrant city with many important customs. For example, door thresholds should not be stepped on, the right hand should be used when passing and receiving objects, and drinking and smoking should not be done in public areas. Please respect these customs during your stay.
